Concussion can be caused directly or indirectly. It can result from any direct blow to the head[2]. However, traumatic forces exerted elsewhere on the body can also cause concussion via an acceleration/deceleration injury to the brain.
Concussions are classified as a subset under Traumatic Brain Injury, which leads to a disruption of normal brain function. ‘Mild traumatic brain injury’ and the term ‘concussion’ are often used interchangeably. Concussion impacts cognitive processes, emotions, and memory in individuals.
Less than 10% of concussions result in loss of consciousness, commonly referred to as being "knocked out," and it is not diagnosing a concussion.
According to Non-Elite (Grassroots) Sport published in 2023 [5], concussion effects were classified into 4 main domains:
1. Physical - e.g. headaches, dizziness, vision changes
2. Mental Processing - e.g. not thinking clearly, feeling slowed down
3. Mood - e.g. short tempered, sad, emotional
4. Sleep - e.g. insomnia, excessive sleep

Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. Some of the acupuncture points stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue which can boost your body's natural painkillers.
Dry Needling
Trigger-point dry needling is an invasive procedure where an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle. It is aimed at myofascial trigger points which are hyper irritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band.
